Julia Louis-Dreyfus says SEINFELD probably couldn’t be made today because ‘it’s hard to get anything different recognized’

Seinfeld it was a roll of the dice. It was a show unlike any previous series, which prided itself on being a series about nothing, with few continuing plots, and which encapsulated the daily lives of a group of sometimes unpleasant, but always entertaining people.

It was a show that gained popularity during its run, making its finale a national event. Of course, there have been popular series since then that attracted the same number of viewers, but for a pre-streaming world it was an anomaly.

And its star, Julia Louis-Dreyfusbelieves it would never even have a chance to thrive in today’s TV climate. During a recent interview with the New York Times, Louis-Dreyfus, who played Elaine Benes on the nine-season series, said there’s little chance a series so different from the mainstream could thrive now.

“Probably not. I mean, what the hell is going on in network television anymore? When Seinfeld was made, it was really different from anything that was on the air at the time. It was just a bunch of losers hanging out.

“So, I would say one of the main reasons it wouldn’t get made now is because it’s hard to get recognition for something different. Especially nowadays, everyone is afraid.”

There are so many great shows that start and end up getting canceled before they can really take off. Some of my favorites over the years that make me particularly angry are The OA, Freaks and geeks, Eli Pietra, Touch, Pushing daisies, So help me Todd, Someone somewhere, Stumptownand the list goes on and on.

But at least Seinfeld it was made and we can still enjoy its absurdity today. Since then Julia Louis-Dreyfus has acted in many films and TV series, and we will next see her in Marvel films. Lightning*due out May 2, 2025.
