Whenever I see people participating in these crazy speed races, I always wonder what happens to the body and digestive system during these races.
Well, PBS Nova spoke with physiology experts and contestants to find out what happens to the human body, and it turns out that these “athletes” train their stomachs to relax and stretch far beyond that of a normal person.
It explains: “The ability to expand the stomach is likely a combination of innate ability and dedicated training. But it’s similar to someone who might have a genetic tendency towards sprinting or marathon running.
“They have muscle fiber types that might lend themselves to intense races, short and super fast, or long and steady. However, you can’t reach the elite class of either type of race without training.
As you might imagine, eating all this food quickly can interfere with digestion and other gastrointestinal functions.
“Undigested matter can remain in the gastrointestinal tract for days, destroying the gut microbiome. …Consuming huge amounts of food in a short period can also cause food to remain in the esophagus waiting to enter the upper part of the stomach.
“Clumped food can cause vomiting or choking. It could also cause long-term damage to the esophagus and stomach.”
