When Richard Donner’S Superman released in theaters in 1978, it bore the iconic slogan: “You’ll Believe a Man Can Fly.” Donner’s cutting-edge visual effects set the standard for cinematic superheroes, leaving audiences awestruck.
After all these years, the superhero genre has evolved greatly, with CGI, green-screen technology, motion capture and artificial intelligence making almost everything imaginable possible.
We live in an age of filmmakers where digital effects may seem routine, but James Gunn he’s reinventing how Superman takes flight, and he’s been thinking about it Top Gun: nonconformist for inspiration for his new one Superman movie.
Gunn revealed how the visceral and candid aerial action of Top Gun: Maverick played a key role in shaping his approach.
Gunn explained to CB: “I wrote this big document about the action and what our philosophy of the action is and how we shoot it… keeping it alive in the air, as well as on the ground.”
What makes this especially challenging, Gunn noted, is that he also likes his previous films Guardians of the Galaxy AND The suicide squad aerial action has always been difficult to get right.
However, Maverick’s the immersive use of practical effects offered him a way forward. “We took a lot from films like Top Gun: nonconformist” said Gunn. “We’re shooting flying things… we shoot a lot of our action with real drones flying in and around Superman and the people he flies with… and we did that on sound stages.”
Gunn promises that the results will bring Superman’s iconic flights to life in an unprecedented way. Thanks to “really small, crazy drones” and a team of some of the best drone pilots in the world, Gunn is creating action sequences that will be incredibly dynamic.
He said: “Everything was planned with me, as always, but at the same time, I was even more successful in finding new things on set… finding the magic where it is.”
The approach is a blend of old-school cinematic ingenuity and modern technology. The use of drones and practical planning is an attempt to stand out and let the public relive the thrill of flight.
Just like Top Gun: nonconformist he made the audience believe they were in the cockpit of a jet, Gunn’s Superman can once again make us believe that a man can fly.
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.
“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
“It’s set in a world very different from ours and very far from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for centuries and we’ll see how that has influenced the history of this world and shaped the DCU.”
Superman stars David Corenswet like Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.
Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
