Rashida Jones is working on the screenplay for the new film TOM AND JERRY for Warner Bros.

Rashida Jones, Will McCormack AND Michele Govier have decided to write a new feature film based on the classic cartoon, Tom and Jerry. The film will be made by Bill Damaschke’s Warner Bros Pictures Animation.

They will start all over again with the new iteration of the misadventures of Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse, created in 1940 by Guglielmo Hanna and Giuseppe Barbera at MGM. Until the animation division closed, MGM made 114 short films that won 7 Oscars. Later versions came from Gene Deitch AND Chuck Jonesand then others. The characters most recently starred in the 2021 hybrid film Tom and Jerry.

Through their prolific Le Train label, Jones and McCormick work as writers, directors and producers with credits that include Celeste and Jesse Forever, Toy Story 4 and The Invite, which Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris will direct for FilmNation, starring Amy Adams, Paul Rudd and Tessa Thompson.

McCormick teamed with Govier to write and direct the Oscar-winning short film If something happens I love you, which was released on Netflix in 2020.

Jones co-directed with Al Hicks Quincya Grammy-winning documentary about his iconic father Quincy Jones. She and McCormick recently collaborated A swimming lessona 20-minute documentary that debuted last Telluride. The image is about swimming coach Bill Marsh as he helps young people replace fear with confidence and security in their lives.

There are no story details or information on the film’s format, but we’ll keep you updated as the project progresses.
