ABC’s popular crime procedural series The newbie is getting a second spin-off series thanks to Lionsgate Television and 20th Television.
The project was written by The newbie Creator Alexi Hawleyand will be set in Washington state. The story will focus on “a cop who enters a new phase of life in his second act.”
It will also maintain the mid-life change concept of the original Los Angeles-set series, which stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, who changed careers to become the LAPD’s oldest rookie.
This news comes as The Rookie heads into its seventh season, which premieres January 7. The Rookie remains one of ABC’s most-watched series and has also emerged as a top performer on streamer Hulu amid a surge in popularity among young viewers.
President of the Disney Television Group Craig Erwich said, “Fans are still discovering that show and will continue for years to come. That’s the staying power of good drama.
