Ryan Reynolds on the future of DEADPOOL in the MCU – “I see Deadpool as a supporting character”

Ryan Reynolds recently talked about Deadpool’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the hit film Deadpool and Wolverine.

Reynolds believes that Deadpool will become more of a supporting character moving forward, and that the next time we see the character it will most likely be in another character’s film.

While speaking with Andrea Garfield in Variety’s Actors on Actors, Reynolds said, “I see Deadpool as more of a supporting character than a main character.” [character] or in the center.

“Sometimes we hit it because they want, that’s what they want. But you can’t hit it unless you take everything away from it. You have to create a situation where he is the loser. And I don’t think I can do it again.

“If he comes back, I think it will be in someone else’s movie. Channing Tatum is so excited to play Gambit that I would be happy to be the fifth banana in his or anyone else’s movie.”

Reynolds went on to explain: “My feeling is this [the] the character works very well in two ways. One is scarcity and surprise. It had been six years since the last one, and part of the reason is that it swallowed up my whole life.

“You can’t take your hands off the controller throughout the journey, from development to post-production to marketing and promotion.

“So in a way… I have four kids and I never want to be on a first name basis with any of them. I never want to be absent and miss things. I kind of die inside when I see their face and they have a competition, or a sporting event, or something, and I missed it.

“So I don’t know what the future of Deadpool is, but Shawn [Levy] and I realized that the film had a beginning, a middle and an end, and that it was a complete experience rather than an advert for another. I think it’s important, sometimes, to make space for a film to just be a film.”

While we don’t know for sure when we’ll next see Deadpool on the big screen, I’m pretty confident he’ll appear in Avengers: Judgment Day and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. There’s also always the possibility that he’ll have a bigger role in those films than we think.

What do you think of Deadpool’s future in the MCU? Where do you think we’ll see him pop up next?
