The 2008 film Slum millionaire was an eight-time Oscar winner, including Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
Now, sixteen years later, the rights to the film have been acquired by Bridge7, a production company founded by the former Netflix executive Swati Shetty and former CAA agent Grant Kessmann.
This makes the property available for new owners to create a movie sequel or TV series adaptation, both of which are in talks.
The film was directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simone Beaufoybased on the book Questions and answers by Vikas Swarup. Slum millionaire follows the story of eighteen-year-old Jamal, played by Dev Patel in his first feature film, whose life of hardship in the slums of Mumbai gives him the answers he needs to win a Who Wants to Be a Millionaire quiz show.
It is unclear whether Patel, the film’s female protagonist, Freida Pintoor other members of the original cast will return for the potential sequel, which will tell “the next chapter of Jamal’s journey.”
Shetty and Kessman said of the project: “Some stories stay with us long after the credits roll and Slum millionaire it is undoubtedly one of them. His narrative is universal, crossing cultural and geographic boundaries, and embodying the kind of stories we love, ones that connect entertainment with profound human experiences.
“What it does Slum millionaire remarkable is not only his cinematic brilliance, spanning storytelling, music and his notable accolades, but also the way he has brought together talent from around the world to form a globally winning team.
