Netflix has released the first trailer for Peter Bergthe next series Primordial Americanset in the brutal American frontier of 1857, where only one goal matters… survival.
The series is the protagonist Taylor Kitsch AND Betty Gilpin and is described as a “raw, adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West.” One of the main protagonists of the series are the Mormons who enter and settle the Utah Territory.
This sounds like an incredible show, and as someone who is fascinated by the American West and how it came to be, I’m very interested in watching this story and seeing how the old American West is portrayed.
It is a “dramatization and fictionalized analysis of the violent collision between culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to hold or reclaim the lands that make up the brutal American frontier.”
Among these are several native tribes that have long occupied the lands, including Shoshone, Paiute and Ute.
The synopsis reads: “This is America… 1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, innocence and tranquility are losing the battle against hate and fear. Peace is a minority diminishing, and very few possess grace – even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival.”
In an effort to provide an authentic story centered on the three tribal nations involved in the story, Indigenous cultural consultant Julie O’Keefe was brought in, working with a network of Native artists, artisans and cultural experts to create an accurate on-screen representation of how these different tribal nations lived.
O’Keefe said in an interview, “After reading the historical accounts of what happened to the Native people of that time period, the violence in Primordial American It’s docile.”
He added: “My approach comes from an academic approach focused on authenticity. Most Hollywood assumes that a person can answer any question about ‘Native Americans.’ There are 574 federally recognized tribal nations in the United States, so this is literally impossible.
“The goal of a Native consultant, although I refer to myself as an Indigenous cultural consultant, is to make sure that the director and all departments receive accurate information so that different tribal cultures are not borrowed or mixed together to represent a sort of mixture of cultures that have nothing to do with the tribe represented.
“Imagine burying the Pope in lederhosen with a Buddhist nun officiating Catholic rites, while everyone dances with the Union Jack flag. This is what it feels like to have your culture misrepresented.”
She continued: “The days of Gun smoke AND Bonanza they are finished. No more brown paint or strange symbols painted on people’s faces. The language is authentic. The clothing isn’t all modeled after Geronimo, and not everyone walks around with a headdress. Not all tribes live in tipis, or if they do, it’s not the same kind of tipis you’ll see in American Primeval.
Berg added: “Julie was there every day to make sure that everything was right, that we had the right hair, the right jewelry, the right clothes, the right language, the right behavior, for the time period and the nations.
“I knew what I didn’t know and she was extremely valuable in helping us all make sure everything was OK. We are very aware of how important it is that all these different groups are honored and that our research and representations are accurate.”
The series is also the protagonist Danish DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Derek Hinkey, Joe Tippett, Jay Courtney, Preston Mota, Shawnee Pourier AND Shea Whigham. Smith and Newman are the showrunners.
All six episodes will be released on January 9, 2025 on Netflix.
