Stephen King’s IT: WELCOME TO DERRY will explore elements of Pennywise we’ve never seen before

Pennywise the Clown star Bill Skarsgard recently talked about the upcoming Max series, En: Welcome to Derry and teases that it will explore some things about Pennywise that we haven’t seen yet.

The actor told SFX magazine: “It was strange to come back. [Producers] Andy AND Barbara Muschietti they were doing the show and I love them. Most of the crew were the same people who made the films.

“So it was this weird thing of going back to this gang of people that you created this thing with.”

He went on to talk specifically about Pennywise, saying, “I don’t know why, but Pennywise is very accessible to me.”

“So in terms of coming back, it was just like ‘Da da dah!’, and it exploded. It’s so defined, it’s kind of a sleeper but it activates very easily.

“We explored things that we didn’t explore in the films – particularly one side of it, which I can’t go into. I hope the fans are excited.”

Well, as a fan, I can tell you that I am very excited for this series. I’ve always wanted to see the story of Derry and Pennywise explored in a movie or TV series.

The prequel series dives into those murky waters, peeling back layers of Derry’s sinister past and exploring a first encounter with It that’s as disturbing as anything from the original story.

It promises to bring to life some of It’s most disturbing moments, the “interludes” that punctuated the horror between Pennywise and the Loser’s Club in King’s novel.

This nine-episode series, developed by Muschietti and En: chapter two scribe Jason Fuchswill delve into the origins of the Reign of Terror in Derry.

Speaking previously about the series, Andy and Barbara said: “It’s so rich in characters and events, we thought we’d do the book and the fans justice by returning to this world.

“Specifically, we are telling the stories of the interludes, writings by Mike Hanlon based on his investigation that includes interviews with the city’s elders. In Welcome to Derry, we touch on the usual themes that were talked about in the film — friendship, loss, the power of a unified faith — but this story also focuses on the use of fear as a weapon, which is one of the things that it is also relevant to our times.”

Muschietti says, “Twenty-seven years is Pennywise’s dormant period. It’s a different part of American history, with a new set of fears for children, as well as adults, that keep in mind the cost of the Cold War.

“Our reference base is 1962, but let’s take a leap into the past… Every 27 years, when it appears, its cycle is marked by two catastrophic events, one at the beginning and one at the end. We’re using Black Spot as an event around which a lot of stories are built.”

They then said: “We will explore Pennywise’s origins, but, as in the book, we will do so with a healthy dose of crypticism.”

En: Welcome to Derry will premiere on HBO and stream on Max in 2025.
