A new Batman animated film trilogy is reportedly in development at DC Studios and is said to be based on Batman: Knightfall.
The news comes from a recent addition to the EIDR system, which “provides a unique identifier for audiovisual content in the global entertainment industry.”
The latest document submitted to the EIDR system states that Warner Bros is producing new animated Batman films, including a trilogy.
DC animated films were previously produced by Warner Bros. and were part of the DC Animated Movie Universe. Now, James Gunn and Peter Safran are leading the charge on animated projects and those labeled Tomorrowverse.
Batman: Knightfall was released in April 1993, and the story explores Bruce Wayne’s physical and psychological limits as Batman. The story begins with the villain Bane orchestrating the release of the inmates of Arkham Asylum, creating chaos in Gotham City to wear Batman down.
As Batman fights to recapture the escaped criminals, his exhaustion reaches a breaking point. Bane exploits this vulnerability, confronting Batman in the Batcave and defeating him in a brutal fight, culminating in Bane breaking Batman’s back.
With Bruce Wayne down, the role of Batman passes to Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael), whose extreme and violent methods alienate allies such as Robin and Commissioner Gordon.
While Bruce eventually recovers and returns to reclaim his role as Gotham’s protector, restoring balance to the city and his own life.
If true, this would make for a fantastic trilogy of animated Batman films.
