The Wonder Years It was my favorite show as a kid, and it still ranks high among other shows I’ve grown to love over the years.
It’s a punch of nostalgia with great storytelling, great acting and the best comedic voice of Daniele Sternwho is the narrator who looks back on his life. That show never fails to make me laugh and cry, even though the ending, while well done, wasn’t what many fans were hoping for.
Actress Danica McKellarwho played Winnie Cooper on the show, spoke out about the finale after all these years, offering some hope to those disgruntled viewers.
In the final episode, which aired on May 12, 1993, the narrator revealed that Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) and Winnie did not end up together, despite their on-and-off relationship throughout the series. She went to Paris to get an art degree and Kevin married someone else, but the two remained friends.
“The fans are still mad about it,” McKellar said on the Nov. 25 episode of “Pod Meets World.” He explained that often on the show “not everything worked out in the end”, which was a way of relating to the audience.
He continued: “Most of our lives also don’t turn out the way we wanted, or thought, so, similarly, Kevin and Winnie didn’t end up together.
“I like to say though, look. All we know is what the narrator said happened… He had a baby with his wife and they were the first to say goodbye to me getting off the plane. This is just the beginning of the story.
“I personally am divorced and remarried and a lot of people are. Maybe Kevin and Winnie ended up together after all.”
Upon the series’ end, executive producer Bob Brush reflected on the ending, which upset some fans. He told the Los Angeles Times in 1993:
“Some viewers will be surprised that nothing works the way your fondest wish would have it. The message I wanted was that this is part of the beauty of life.
“It’s fine to say, ‘I wish everything was like it was when I was 15 and I was happy,’ but it seemed more encouraging to say let’s leave these things behind and go and forge new lives for ourselves.
I wanted to see Kevin and Winnie end up together as much as anyone. My parents met at Jr. High School in the 1960s, so this story felt so familiar and right. When they didn’t get married in the finale, I was sad.
But, living my life as an adult who ended up marrying someone who wasn’t my high school sweetheart, I get it now. We can’t see what the future holds when we’re young, and sometimes what lies ahead is even better than what we had to leave behind.
