Ralph Macchio talks about how his film KARATE KID: LEGENDS fits into the Miyagi-verse and COBRA KAI timeline

Ralph Macchio he had a nice return as his character Daniel LaRusso, who debuted in The Karate Kid over 40 years ago. The series Cobra Kai took Daniel and Johnny (William Zabka) lives decades later and has watched them re-enter the world of karate and transform from enemies to friends, or perhaps frenemies, and back and forth again.

The show is funny and has so much heart, it’s the perfect reunion to tie up loose ends and give fans a real goodbye after decades of fandom.

The final five episodes will be released in the next few months, and while that may be the last time we see some characters, the show’s creators have expressed that spinoffs are not out of the question.

While we wait to see how it all turns out, we know we’ll see Macchio’s Daniel star in the next film, Karate Kid: Legendsin which he will star Jackie Chan.

In a recent interview with Variety, Macchio spoke about the film’s positioning within the Miyagi-verse, which it includes Cobra Kai. Karate Kid: Legends will take place three years after the events of Cobra Kai.

Macchio said of the film:

“It wasn’t a quick decision, because it was about protecting Daniel LaRusso’s character, finding out where he would be at that point, and then protecting the entire legacy of the Miyagi-verse. Once we were able to line them up, for the story of “Cobra Kai” to lead to the new movie – even though they are separate ecosystems – it all made sense to me. So, working with Jackie was just super exciting. I started doing it on the big screen. How great is it to bring it back to the big screen?”

As for the future, Macchio is eager to get into directing more and hopes to help Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg make a Mr. Miyagi origin series a reality. Furthermore, he wants to explore other characters beyond the Karate Kid universe.

Want Karate Kid: Legends mark his final bow as Daniel? Macchio replied:

“I don’t want to overstay the welcome of such a beloved character. But he’s getting older like me, so there may be other areas to explore as well. Never say never.”

Never say never really. Who knew we could ever have such a great show Cobra Kai? Who knows what the future holds for these great characters? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
