Warner Bros. is developing a remake of the 1956 sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet. The film will be written by the cartoonist and the screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan (Fugitives, Under the Dome, Lost), and will be produced by Emma Watts.
James Cameron he once attempted to make this film, but due to complicated rights issues, he was never able to move forward. WB was able to overcome this obstacle and is now moving forward with their project.
The original film is set in the 23rd century. The story follows Commander John J. Adams and the crew of the United Planets starship C-57D as they are sent to the distant planet Altair IV to investigate the disappearance of a previous expedition.
When they arrive, they discover Doctor Edward Morbius, a survivor living in seclusion with his daughter Altaira and their advanced robot servant, Robby. Morbius reveals that the rest of the expedition was mysteriously killed and has since discovered the remains of an ancient and highly advanced alien civilization known as Krell.
These aliens built a massive underground machine capable of materializing thoughts into reality, but their civilization was destroyed by the unintended consequences of this technology.
As the crew explores the planet, they encounter a mysterious, unseen force that threatens their lives. It is eventually revealed that the “monster” is a manifestation of Doctor Morbius’ subconscious mind, amplified by Krell’s machine.
His repressed desires and fears have become a destructive force, leading to the deaths of previous members of the expedition.
The original movie is amazing! But I like those old sci-fi movies from the 50s and 60s. I was excited about the remake when Cameron was trying to make it. Let’s hope this new creative team puts together a great story and team to make this reimagining happen Forbidden Planet to life.
