First look at the live-action Hiccup and Toothless movie HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

Here’s our first look at the upcoming live-action film adaptation of How to train your dragon what characteristics Mason Thames (The black phone) as the young Viking Hiccup. We also have a few other photos leaked online that offer a look at the dragon Toothless.

The film comes from the director Dean DeBloiswho directed all three animated films along with the co-director Chris Sanders about the first film.

DeBlois spoke about the film with Empire in an interview, and when speaking about the scene in which Hiccup has to pretend to confront Toothless for the benefit of the dragon-fearing people of Berk, he said:

“It’s so complicated in terms of the stakes: having a completely believable, photoreal dragon running around trying to kill him,”

When talking about Hiccup, DeBlois says the character “represents all the wackiness out there, and there are a lot of us.”

Speaking about choosing Thames for the role, DeBois said: “There was a little awkwardness, but also a vulnerability in him that [came] with the fact that he was 15 when we auditioned him.

The film is also the protagonist Nico Parker (The last of us) in the role of Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, the leader of the Viking clan and Hiccup’s father, and Nick Frost (Dawn of the Dead, Hot fuzz) as the Viking called Gobber the Belch, Stoick’s trusted friend and advisor.

Using the books of Cressida Cowell as a starting point, How to train your dragon focuses on the special friendship between a young and unheroic Viking boy named Hiccup and Toothless, an injured dragon who he nurses back to health.

The films chronicled Hiccup and Toothless’ quest to combat humanity’s prejudices against dragons, the pain of overcoming the loss of a parent, and first love.

The film will be released on June 13, 2025.
