SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 Director Confirms Film Will Offer Two Jim Carrey Characters and One New Post-Credits Character

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is coming next month and it looks like fans are in for a treat. The film will reveal the character of Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by the fan-favorite actor Keanu Reeveswho is said to have really done his homework on the character.

He is joined in the film by returning cast members Ben Schwartzwho returned as Sonic James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Colleen O’Shaughnessey vocals Miles “Tails” Prower, e Idris Elba Knuckles the Echidna voices. Jim Carrey he’s back as the evil Dr. Robotnik, but this time he works double time.

In addition to reprising his role as Sonic’s mad nemesis, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the great comedian also plays Robotnik’s grandfather and Shadow’s creator in another equally intense work with prosthetics and costumes. The director of the film, Jeff Fowlerspoke about the process in an interview with EW, where he explained, “It was a really big ask.”

Logistically, it meant the Ace Ventura the actor would have double the work since they couldn’t film both plays on the same days. Carrey’s transformation into Gerald alone took three hours in the makeup chair each time. Luckily, Carrey was ready. “I don’t know what we would have done,” observes Fowler. “I don’t even want to think about it.”

The material seemed to write itself, the director also notes. Initially, they focused on drawing parallels between these two mad scientists, “not just with the bald heads and giant mustaches, but also in their behavior and attitude,” he says.

“But then, just from a narrative point of view, it was necessary to somehow create the right kind of conflict for the film. I don’t want to give anything away, but it was really fun to plot it, to bring out with all those interactions and all the different needs of the story that needed to happen, Jim was an exceptional partner in designing it all.

Carrey makes every character he lends his talents to that much bigger and better. I can’t wait to see him in these roles.

The article goes on to say that the film will continue the tradition established by the previous two films and will also set the stage for a potential fourth film that will introduce another video game character after Tails and now Shadow. Of course, don’t expect Fowler to give up the goods just yet.

“It’s fun to see fans debate online about who will appear next, who will be made fun of at the end of the movie,” he says. “We have a lot of the same conversations.

“We all have our favorites cinematically, and we’re all really advocating ‘it should be this or that.’ It’s fun to keep that anticipation. This film is no different in terms of teasing new characters.”

Who are you hoping to see join the franchise in the next post-credits scene?! Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in theaters on December 20th.
