Tom Cruise is in talks with Paramount Pictures to star in a sequel to his 1990 NASCAR drama Days of thunder.
The original film was directed by Tony Scott and written by Robert Towne. It’s a high-octane sports drama that follows Cole Trickle (Cruise), a hot-headed young race car driver, as he enters the world of NASCAR with big dreams but little experience.
Guided by experienced crew chief Harry Hogge, Cole learns to harness his raw talent and navigate the intense rivalries and dangers of professional racing. Initially, Cole’s aggressive style leads to conflicts with veteran driver Rowdy Burns, as well as challenges that jeopardize his career.
Thanks to Harry’s tough mentorship, Cole begins to understand the strategy, precision and team effort needed to succeed on the track.
I haven’t watched Days of Thunder in a long time, but I remember it being an okay movie. There are no details regarding the film’s creative direction and no other creative talent is attached. It will be interesting to see who the studio brings in to direct.
Cruise is currently preparing to shoot a new film with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for Warner Bros and Legendary. The actor will next appear in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, out May 23, 2025.
