Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks are moving forward with their live-action film adaptation of Gundam with Sweetness showrunner Jim Mickle going as far as writing and directing.
Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) was developing the film for Netflix, but neither is involved in the project anymore. Legendary starts from scratch with Mickle at the helm.
The plot is currently under wraps, but production on the film is expected to begin in early 2025.
Mobile Suit Gundam is a pioneering mecha anime series created by Yoshiyuki Tomino that debuted in 1979. Set in a futuristic era called the Universal Century, the story takes place during a brutal conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, a space colony seeking independence from the oppressive rule of the Earth.
Zeon uses advanced mobile suits, humanoid fighting machines piloted by soldiers, to gain the upper hand in the war. The story follows Amuro Ray, a young boy who finds himself piloting the Earth Federation’s prototype mobile suit, the RX-78-2 Gundam, after a Zeon attack on his colony.
Over the course of the series, Amuro battles the skilled Zeon ace Char Aznable, explores the psychological toll of war on his characters, and explores the harsh realities that drive them to fight and survive.
I enjoyed the Sweet Tooth series, but Gundam is a completely different kind of beast and I hope it has the talent to tell an epic, visually stunning story.
