Josh Brolin says he would be open to returning to play Thanos in the MCU if the idea was right: “I would do anything the Russos wanted me to do”

Josh BrolinSupervillain Thanos was triumphantly defeated Avengers: Endgameand we all closed the door on his plot. But it’s back in the spotlight in the last week, like the series Agata always he revealed it Aubrey SquareRio Vidal’s character as the Marvel villain Death.

In the comics, Death is the object of Thanos’ affection, and remembering their connection, fans have wondered if we might see something similar in the final episodes of Agatha or in a future MCU project.

While the creator of the show, Jac Schaefferconfirmed that he won’t touch on Thanos’ story in his series, Brolin was asked if he would ever return to the role to explore more of his past. Speaking to Collider at New York Comic Con, the actor said he would have been up for it if the story was right.

“I’m not kidding: Playing Thanos is like, ‘Oh, they’re going to bring Thanos back.’ It’s like Sicario; it has to be right. It’s like Ryan Reynolds and I are talking about Taylor Swift and we should be talking about Deadpool 4.

“But we go back and forth. Again, it’s what fits in his mind, what fits in my mind. Thanos has to adapt if you want to bring him back. I would do anything the Russos wanted me to do.”

I feel like Thanos’ story was wrapped up the right way. But interestingly, the Russos will return to direct the next two Avengers films and may bring back a variant of Thanos.

Stranger things have happened… kind of Robert Downey Jr. returning to play Dr. Victor von Doom! Plus the Russos have two characters to choose from when it comes to Josh Brolin.

Now that Deadpool is part of the MCU, Brolin’s Cable from the second film would also be fair game to add to the roster.

As always, we’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out. Avengers: Judgment Day will be released on May 1, 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on May 7, 2027.
