John Turturro explains why he refused to reprise his role in THE BATMAN in THE PENGUIN series

The Batman was a fantastically dark and fresh take on The Dark Knight’s story, building a new Gotham with deep, rich characters that we couldn’t wait to see explored further.

Although we will have to wait almost two more years to see the main story continue Batman Part IIwe delved into the character of Oz Cobb in the HBO Max series The Penguin. Cobb was played masterfully Colin Farrellwith practical makeup and prosthetics.

The series takes place immediately after the end of the first film, telling the story of Oz Cobb’s rise to power. While the film was being watched Giovanni TurturroCarmine Falcone, meets his death, the show offers a look at the story of Cobb and Falcone.

This meant bringing the character back for flashback scenes throughout the series. But when Emmy-winning actor Turturro was approached about the script, he refused to return. Instead Marco Forte he is facing the mafia boss.

Turturro explained to Variety: “I did what I wanted with the role. There was a lot of violence towards women on the show, and that’s not my thing.”

Falcone radiated brutality The Batmanbut in the 2022 film, his cruelty is implied rather than illustrated. “It happens off screen,” Turturro says. “It’s scarier that way.”

Turning down a return to Gotham was also partly due to the fact that there was more opportunity than time. “You can’t do everything you want,” he admits.

Turturro can next be seen in the second season of the great Apple TV+ series Separationas well as several other films he is entering production on, including the biopic Me and Wilderin which he will star Christoph Waltz, Maya HawkeAND Jon Hamm.
