This week’s FilmQuest short is a trailer for a horror comedy parody film called Fucking ghostsabout a family who buys a new house haunted by horny ghosts.
The film comes from the writer and director Jason Cook and I’ve included an interview with him which you can read below.
This short film is shared in collaboration with the FilmQuest Film Festival, where we are looking to showcase some of the radical independent genre films and shorts that filmmakers are creating.
Without spoilers, tell us what your film is about, its characters and its themes. Is this a proof of concept or a standalone story?
Fucking Ghosts is a parody trailer for a fake horror movie about a family who buys a new house haunted by horny ghosts.
What was the inspiration for your film? How did the idea come to you?
I was thinking about really scary ghost movies like Paranormal Activity, and thought I’d lower the stakes a bit. For example, what if ghosts were really horny? What would it be like? I set out to find some answers.
Tell us about yourself. What is your background? How long have you been a director?
I am an experienced business director and creative director in the advertising space. My love for comedy and cinema led me to collaborate with a comedy group called Superfunny, for which this film was produced.
What inspires you to work in genre cinema and tell these types of stories?
I thought the idea of a very broad comedic take on horror movie clichés would be really fun.
What was your favorite part of the filmmaking process for this project?
Collaboration! All the improvisation we did was really fun. The screaming stops and the room erupts in laughter.
What are you most proud of about this film?
I love that this silly (but fun) idea resonated so much with so many people. Just trusting my instincts was so validating.
What is a favorite story or moment from the making of the film that you would like to share?
I was the ghost voice on set for the actors’ lines, and I ended up doing ADR for the film.
What was the most challenging moment or experience you had while making your film?
Working with a small crew has its challenges, but they worked magically. We made our days better and kept our promise.
If so, how did your film change or differ from the original concept during pre-production, production, and/or post-production? How has it changed the way you approach future projects?
Editing the film myself was a big learning curve. It changed countless times during editing and I definitely missed some great and hilarious scenes because they messed up the pacing.
Who were some of your collaborators and actors in the film? How did you start working together?
Ben Morrison, Natalie Lynch, Piotr Michael. Ben is a long-time collaborator of mine. Piotr, Ben and I made a film together called “Stuck in Jeff” about a stand up comic who nails his impression of Jeff Goldblum. Natalie arrived last minute and was a true professional. She is the best!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as a filmmaker and what would you like to say to new filmmakers?
Trust your instincts and trust the process.
What are your plans for your career and what do you hope this film does for that? What kinds of stories would you like to tell moving forward?
I’m writing a long version of Ghosts and developing some other things as well.
Where can we find more of your work and where can interested people contact you? Do you have a website or YouTube/Vimeo channel? Social media handles?

Bonus question no. 1: What is your favorite movie of all time?
Just in terms of views, it has to be Point Break.
Bonus question no. 2: What is the film that most inspired you to become a director and/or had the greatest influence on your work?
2001 was kind of a surreal experience for me. I remember marveling at the production design and cinematography, and the way the film was made and edited was very inspiring. It was the first time I noticed these things when I was young, and it was my first desire to become a storyteller in my own right.
