James Gunn shared a new image from Superman and features our first official look at Kal-El’s canine companion, Krypto the Superdog. The photo shows the Krypto sitting next to it David Corenswetis Superman as they observe planet Earth.
The version of Krypto in this film is inspired by Gunn’s rescued dog, Ozu, and appears to be a photorealistic CGI creation. The image came with the following note from Gunn:
“Krypto will hit screens with Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after we started writing Superman.
“Ozu, who came from a backyard hoarding situation with 60 other dogs and had never met humans, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in and destroyed our house, our shoes, our furniture and even ate my laptop.
“It took a long time before she even allowed herself to touch it. I remember thinking, ‘Man, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and so Krypto entered the script and changed the shape of the story just as Ozu was changing my life.
“What better time to debut the not-so-nice Krypto guy of the month #AdoptAShelterDog. However, Ozu today is, quite often, a very good guy.
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman even stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.
Superman The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
