SEVERANCE Producer Says Creators Are Planning Future Seasons, Teases Season 2 Will Dive Into Lumon Lore

Season 2 of the highly anticipated Apple series Separation will finally return this January, and if all goes according to plan, we’ll see the show continue for a few more seasons as the story fully unfolds.

According to the show’s producer, Mohamed El Masriseries creator Dan Erickson and executive producer and director Ben Stiller they have already “mapped out” the entire arc of the sci-fi workplace drama.

In a recent interview with Indie Wire, El Masri talked about building the world of Separationsaying: “There was always a thought about future seasons. Even in season two we were talking about what is the end game and how does this show end? There was a lot of talk about this.

“I think there’s a natural overlap that happens, especially with the second season of a show, that you have to maintain.” [the momentum] going.

“People are interested, people are watching, and now with Season 2, you really have to think about, not only what will Season 2 deliver in a satisfying way, but how does it set up Season 3 and beyond?”

El Masri teased that season two will “show us the direction we want to go” to conclude the series as a whole. “I know there was some work to do on season three while they were still filming season two,” El Masri confirmed. So, will it take another three years to make a possible third season, like the gap between seasons 1 and 2?

“This is something I can’t talk about ultimately,” El Masri said. “I’ll say, is it going to be another 3 1/2 years before the show comes out with season three? I mean, I hope not, just as a fan. I hope we don’t have to wait that long. But, you know, it’s Hollywood.

He added: “What I would say is that Ben and Dan and the whole team are perfectionists and want it to be great. And if that takes, you know, a year, two years, three years or whatever it is, they’ll just take the time they need to make it the show they want, and clearly that pays off and in a remarkable first season. I feel like Ben and Dan and everyone else won’t post something they don’t think is great.

El Masri went on to say that the second season will delve into the lore of Lumon. “[Series creator] Dan had all these ideas about where it was going,” El Masri said of starting to write season two while season one was still in production. El Masri also received a 50-page “really massive Bible series” from Erickson, who had spent five years developing the world of “Severance” before EP Stiller brought the show to the screen.

“We spent the first two months in the writer’s room [when] they were still filming the first season, so we were still tying the end of the first season into the second season.

“Dan really wanted to articulate what this world is doing, how to really understand it. So we had to do it. Every single thing you find has to have a purpose and we have to articulate that to the audience.

According to El Masri, showrunner Erickson has “mapped out the entire vision” for the series, and the series’ writers are tasked with providing “answers” to the show’s mysteries, such as what MD is, what the Lumon workers are actually doing to a period. work and whatnot is housed in Lumon’s enormous headquarters.

The screenwriter explained it Separation it has a “video game quality” in presenting “undiscovered parts of the map” to the public. “Lumon, it seems to me, is a huge complex. Let’s just look at a couple of plans. Where is everyone? It feels a little empty,” El Masri said while hinting at the plots of the second season.

“A lot of our work in Season 2 was: What else is in this place? Where else can we go? What else can we find out? What does this company want? How did this company arrive in this city? What does this family want? It’s stuff you have to answer.

Unlike other shows with sci-fi elements like Lost, Separation it is not “figuring it out as we go along.” “Dan is not that guy,” El Masri said of Erickson.

“He’s very meticulous and very detailed about the world he created. So we have to work within these relative parameters. It’s his vision, it’s all in his head and, you know, you have to get it out. You really have to get it from him.

“But at the same time, it’s a living thing and you have to adapt and change. We have to go back and revisit and pivot and rewrite and make sure that it not only makes sense from a science fiction place, but that the emotional journeys follow and connect to the interesting things in a way that makes sense organically. “

I’m excited to rewatch season one and get reacquainted with the story before season two releases! It looks like the creators have a great story to tell and we’re in for a wild ride. Separation The second season will premiere on January 17, 2025 on Apple TV+.
