Saoirse Ronan addresses Yelena Belova on MCU casting rumors: ‘I don’t see myself doing Marvel’

When Marvel Studios was trying to cast Yelena Belova for 2021 Black Widow movies, both Florence Pugh AND Saoirse Ronan they were at the top Kevin Feigethe wish list. In fact, Ronan was initially offered the role and turned it down.

During a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Ronan was asked about this and he pretty much confirmed those reports by saying, “How did you find out about this? I don’t know.” [Laughs].”

Ronan is best known for her roles in critically acclaimed films such as Little Women, Lady BirdAND Atonement. He went on to say that he wants to act in bigger movies, but Marvel movies aren’t what he’s looking for.

The actress said: “I can’t see myself in the world of Marvel. No. No. I’d rather do Bond. There’s nothing wrong with [Marvel]. And I think they’re brilliant films.

“I want to make bigger films, especially after seeing them Greta [Gerwig] Do Barbie. I want to do it. Obviously I want to do that stuff.”

Ronan previously said she would like to do a bigger film and that she would like to play a Bond villain: “I’d love to do something big and shiny. I’d love to do that.”

Ronan also talked about wanting to make blockbusters, especially after losing a role in the film The Hobbit. He said:

“That’s why I don’t think you can put anyone in one category, and even though I mostly choose very respected, drama-fueled, thought-provoking pieces, I love doing that. But I’m also like, ‘I’ve done a lot of that. I think that I want to make a great film now.’ And I hope I can do that.”

I think Ronan would have been interesting to see in the role of Yelena Belova. She is a great actress and I have no doubt that she would have brought something special to the role. But Pugh ended up fitting the character perfectly, and I’m a fan of what she brought to the role.

Pugh’s next Marvel movie will be Lightning* and she is expected to appear too Avengers: Judgment Day AND Avengers: Secret Wars.
