Matt Reeves AND Lauren LeFranc’S The Penguin It’s been a damn great show to watch so far, and I’ve loved the direction the story is headed. Episode 3 explored a lot of interesting things in the aftermath of Riddler’s plan, PTSD, and more. There is also some strong character development in this episode.
But one thing I wanted to talk about is the drug “Bliss”, which was introduced in the episode. Sofia Falcone (Cristina Milioti) and his brother Alberto (Michael Zegen) were planning to spread this drug on the streets of Gotham City.
Bliss is a new narcotic that would help the Falcone boys end their father’s control of the drug “Drops”, with the profits from the drug they would control 100%.
After Alberto was killed in episode 1 by Oz, it was Sofia who involved him in the new venture. He takes Oz to the secret warehouse where the new drug is being manufactured, and while there, Oz notices that the deliveries coming into the facility are bags marked with the Arkham State Hospital logo.
Sofia is the one who actually masterminded this new drug scheme, during her years there. He reveals that his new drug is made from a very rare and fragile mushroom, which has blood-red spores on it.
The mushrooms’ red spores are called “bleeding teeth” and are used to produce a euphoric high, which Sofia plans to market as the ultimate party drug. We see the drug in action at a club rave and convinces the leader of a Triad gang to go into business with them.
My first thought is who is actually designing this drug, and since it comes from a fungus, my mind immediately went to Poison Ivy, aka Dr. Pamela Isley. She is someone who knows about the mushroom and its euphoric effects. He would also know how to turn it into a consumable drug.
It’s not hard to think that Poison Ivy will eventually make her way into the Batman universe and this seems like the perfect way to do it. It’s safe to say that the creative team will reimagine the character in a new way, perhaps even tying him to the pharmaceutical industry.
Anyway, trailers for the series have teased flashback scenes of Sofia Falcone while she was at Arkham Asylum, so perhaps Dr. Pam Isley will appear there at some point to educate Sofia about mushrooms and develop Bliss.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
