Samuel L. Jackson he’s generally known for playing a tough guy, first heavily associated with the films of Quentin Tarantino, and now for the past sixteen years, the founder of the MCU’s Avengers and former leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury.
Entering his first appearance in the role, in the post-credits scene of Iron Man (2008), no one, including Jackson, could have known what was happening. So when the actor was asked to sign a nine-picture deal, he was overwhelmed by the thought.
During a recent interview with GQ (via Variety), Jackson said, “I knew I had a nine-picture deal. [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] he said that, “We will offer you a nine-picture contract.”
“How long do you have to stay alive to make nine movies? It’s not the fastest process in the world. I didn’t know they were going to make nine movies in about two and a half years. It’s a little crazy! Oh shit, I’m running out of contracts. It worked.
No one could have predicted the pace at which we would see those early stages of the Marvel roster develop. But it certainly worked for Jackson, who previously told the Los Angeles Times that he never lost interest in his role as Nick Fury and that he would rather make billion-dollar Marvel movies than win Oscars or chase Oscar-inducing roles .
“As much as I wanted to be tired of it, you know thinking, ‘Well, I should have won an Oscar for this or I should have won for that and it didn’t happen,’ once I got over that many years ago, it wasn’t a big deal for me.
“I always have fun going to the Oscars. I look forward to receiving a gift basket for being a presenter. I give things to my relatives; my daughter and wife took things out. It’s beautiful. … But otherwise, I was over it.”
Jackson added: “I would never let the Oscars be a measure of my success or failure as an actor. The measure of my success is my happiness: am I satisfied with what I am doing? I’m not going to make movies about chasing statues. You know, “If you make this movie, you’ll win an Oscar.” No thank you. I’d rather be Nick Fury. Or have fun as Mace Windu with a lightsaber in hand.”
Jackson is so loved and has given us so many incredible performances. It’s nice that he’s out there having fun and isn’t worried about statues. Plus you know he’s earning the money he deserves.
Samuel L. Jackson can next be seen in the western The Holy Trinityand science fiction comedy Afterburning. Those are in post-production, but no release date has been announced yet.
