Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone, deputy, Chicago Fire) is the writer and showrunner of the series and shared the following insight on the project:
“When Atomic Monster first approached me about creating a series adaptation of Robert McCammon’s novel, Sting-A no holds barredgigantic spectacle of a novel along the lines of The Stand, independence Day AND Attacks on Mars—to tell the truth, I didn’t want to take any risks.
“I’m not a playwright. I’m a less is more writer. I’m more into what’s known as keyhole epics. Big stories told through small lenses. Think Signals, The thing, A quiet place.
“But here’s the thing. I read Sting and it stuck with me. It wouldn’t leave me alone. I just couldn’t stop thinking about its razor-sharp premise, how it unfolds over the course of a single, harrowing day, and how relatable and True McCammon family takes center stage. That’s when the flash bang light bulb idea hit.
“What if I adapted Sting in a way that honors the book AND stay true to the kind of stories I like to tell? Keep the presumption. Keep The sting more effective elements. Take away the big ensemble. Take away the giant sets. Take away the crowded city setting of the book, too.
“The adaptation would be like an acoustic guitar version of, say, a Radiohead song. It won’t have the production value, the electronic instruments, the loops or the synthesized bells and whistles, but it will still have the melody, the structure, the lyrics, the real magic at the core, all the things that make a great song a Great song.
“All of which is to say that suddenly I could see exactly what to do and how to do it. Two weeks later, Atomic Monster had the script for the first episode.
“Soon after, Peacock bought it. Not long after, both my creative and career dreams began to come true, as more scripts were written, hires were made, actors were cast, sets were built, and production began…
“Of course, during production the series changed and evolved. Just as it should. Even the title is different. Sting it’s now Tea cupThe reasons for this are too spoilery to share, but watch the first few episodes and all will be revealed.
“The point is that the series has become its own thing: a brain-bending mystery, a chilling thriller, a I can’t but I have towatch a horror story, a family drama, a science fiction epic, of the “keyhole” variety, of course.
“But however singular, strange and surprising I hope Tea cup is, all you have to do is peel back the layers, the characters, the situations and the mythology and look behind the emotions, the thrills, the twists and turns and make you jump reveals.
“Do all this and you will see, deep down, Tea cup is still very much standing on the shoulders of Sting. Just as it should.”
James Wan said in a statement: “After reading Robert McCammon’s book Stingthe entire Atomic Monster team felt a spark.
“The story had all the ingredients for a captivating series and Ian McCulloch had the vision to bring it to life in a new way, one that was at once surprising and darkly atmospheric, but filled with a rich sense of humanity, often devoid of sharp narratives.
“Adding our incredibly talented cast led by Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer, fans are in for a truly spine-chilling experience.
“Tea cup defies easy labels. It’s a genre-bending blend of horror, mystery, and drama, with layers that unfold like a captivating puzzle. It goes beyond thrills and spills and holds a mirror up to humanity, exploring the darkness that lies within us all. We hope you’ll enjoy this wild ride as much as we loved creating it!”
