She is haunted by visions of her dead lover, Rene, and another mysterious man, Marcel, which lead her to question what is real and what is a figment of her imagination. The lines between reality and fantasy blur as Cathryn’s paranoia escalates, and she finds herself embroiled in a nightmarish battle with her own mind.
The film is a disorienting and surreal visual experience, as Altman uses unconventional sound design, disturbing imagery, and an ambiguous plot to create an unsettling atmosphere.
