Ugo Grant he’s a great actor. He easily elevates a dry comic role and plays a real creeper. He’s showing off his creepy skills in the new horror thriller Hereticin which he plays a man who meets two Mormon missionary sisters who knock on his door and “attempt to convert a man who turns out to be far more dangerous than they could have anticipated.”
The character looks pretty sinister in the film’s trailer, and Grant says he drew inspiration from real-life acquaintances to prepare for the role. He told Entertainment Weekly:
“There have been people in my life who have been helpful to me, people who were very, very intelligent, brilliant, really, and in some ways very plausible and quite fascinating and bewitching, but who gradually you realize there’s something profoundly wrong with them.
“And these people very often have a really hard time having relationships in life, meaningful friendships, and they resort to things like pranks and unfunny jokes, modeling and things like that.”
Grant wouldn’t say who he was referring to, but that’s probably wise, considering they’re the people he based the character of Mr. Reed on. Grant revealed the process he went through to better understand his character, and explained that he would ask himself why Mr. Reed says and does certain things.
“Very often, the answers to these questions lead to areas of their past. I write them down and create a sort of extensive backstory and biography for the character.”
Grant stars in the film alongside Chloe East (The Fabelmans) AND Sophia Thatcher (yellow wasps), and the official synopsis reads: “Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are taken in by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming trapped in his deadly game of cat and mouse.”
Heretic comes from A quiet place writers Scott Beck AND Bryan’s Woodswho wrote and directed the film together. A24 will release Heretic in theaters November 15, 2024.
