While Dune: Messiah will be Denis Villeneuvethe final Dune film, the story it tells will not close the chapter on the franchise and, according to him, other films could be made with other directors.
The director recently appeared on Vanity Fair’s Little Gold Men podcast, and speaking about the first two films, he said: “First of all, it’s important for people to understand that for me, this was really a diptych.
“It was actually a couple of films that will be the adaptation of the first book. Done and finished. If I do a third one, which is being written, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say, but if I go back, it’s to do something that is different and has its own identity.”
Dune Messiah is set 12 years after the events of the first Dune novel, so a film adaptation would likely have to age up Villeneuve’s young cast which includes Timothee Chalamet, zendaya …AND Florence PughIn this regard, the director said: “I know how to do it”, but did not share further details.
Villeneuve goes on to say that he has no problem accepting other directors taking his place after spending so many years making these films.
He shared: “Listen, if Dune: Messiah happens, it will have been many years for me on Arrakis, and I would like to do something else. I think it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiahthere are seeds in the project if anyone wants to do something else later, because they are beautiful books.
“They’re harder to adapt. They’re getting more and more esoteric. It’s a little harder to adapt, but I don’t close the door. I won’t do it myself, but it could happen with someone else.”
I’m sure Villeneuve will end up doing Dune: MessiahAs for what happens next, that’s a mystery! But is there another director you’d like to see try his hand at making a Dune movie?
