Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for the director by Jon M. Chufilm adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Eviland features a ton of new footage and highlights the song “Defying Gravity.” I’ve also included two more posters from the movie.
The three-time Tony Award-winning musical was adapted from a book by Gregory Maguireand it’s a prequel to The Wizard of OzTells the story of how the green-skinned Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West ( Cynthia Erivo), as well as the journey of the sorceress Glinda to become known as the Good Witch (Ariana Grande ).
Wicked tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, including Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Glinda, a young woman of the people, enriched by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and form an unlikely but deep friendship. After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.
Glinda’s unshakable desire for popularity leads her to be seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself and those around her will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future.
Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately lead them to realize their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Michelle Yeoh as the regal principal of Shiz University, Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Traveling Companions) like Fiyero, a mischievous and carefree prince; Ethan Slater (of Broadway Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favorite sister; and Jeff Goldblum like the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two intriguing compatriots of Glinda played by The Bowen Yang (Saturday night live) AND James Bronwyn (Prostitutes), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Keala Settlement (The greatest showman).
Chu directs the two-part film, based on a screenplay written by the author of the book of the stage play. Holzman Winner and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz.
