Megalopolis writer and director Francis Ford Coppola recently spoke about the production of his next sci-fi film Megalopolis and as he did not want his film to be considered some kind of “conscious Hollywood production”, he chose actors who were considered “cancelled”.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Coppola explained: “What I didn’t want to happen was for us to be seen as a self-conscious Hollywood production that’s just preaching to the audience.
“The cast includes people who have been written off at one point or another. There were people who are ultra-conservative and people who are extremely politically progressive. But we were all working together on a film. It was interesting, I thought.”
The stars of the film Adam Driverand tells the intriguing story of an architect who dreams of a utopian version of New York City in the near future and his battle with the conservative mayor, who has different ideas about the city.
Contained within the epic are a myriad of plots and characters. “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic tale of political ambition.”
The rest of the cast includes actors like Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman, all of whom have raised some eyebrows.
LaBeouf is currently facing a lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend and singer-songwriter FKA Twigs alleging physical and sexual abuse.
As for Hoffman, he was accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old intern he worked with on the set of the 1985 TV movie Death of a Salesman.
Then there’s Voight, who is a Republican and a big supporter of former President Donald Trump, and this has been a point of contention in his relationship with daughter Angelina Jolie.
Coppola continued, “This turns me into politics, and my publicist will yell at me if I start talking about politics. This movie is not going to cure our ills. But I truly believe that what will save us is that we have to talk about the future.
“We want to be able to ask all the questions that come to mind to really understand why this country is divided right now, and that will provide an energy that will defeat those people who want to destroy our republic.
“I made this film to contribute to that. And all I want is for this film to start a dialogue. You can’t have a utopia without a dialogue.”
Coppola described the film as “a love story. A woman is torn between loyalty to two men. But not just two men. Each man has a philosophical principle.
“One is her father who raised her, who taught her Latin on his knee and is devoted to a much more classical vision of society, a vision similar to that of Marcus Aurelius.
“The other one, who is the lover, is the enemy of the father but is dedicated to a ‘Let’s jump into the future, let’s jump over all this garbage that has contaminated humanity for 10,000 years. Let’s find what we really are, which is an enlightened, friendly, joyful species.'”
Coppola also spoke about the film and its purpose, saying, “My first goal is always to make a film with all my heart, so I started to realize that it would be about love and loyalty in every aspect of human life.”
He explained: “Megalopolis echoed these sentiments, where love was expressed in an almost crystalline complexity, our planet in danger and our human family almost in an act of suicide, to become a very optimistic film that has faith in the human being as the possessor of the genius to cure any problem that is placed before us.”
The director added: “I believe in America. Our founders borrowed a constitution, Roman law, and a senate for their revolutionary government without a king. American history could not have happened or succeeded without classical learning to guide it.”
The film’s cast also includes Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Author: Laurence Fishburne, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn’s Hunter, James Remar, County of Talia, Chloe Fineman (Saturday night live), Isabelle Kusman (Licorice Pizza), Dr. Sweeney (Fire in the sky), Bailey IvesAND Giancarlo Esposito.
Lionsgate will release the film on September 27, 2024.
