Mike Flanagan He has had a long and distinguished career developing and directing horror projects, and the films and TV series he has made have been truly fantastic!
He has worked on projects such as The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, Midnight Massand more. During a recent appearance at FanEXPO Canada this past weekend, Flanagan said he’s a fan of DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn and would love to join Gunn’s new DC Universe at some point in his career.
During the panel, the director said: “I’ve always been a huge fan of James Gunn as a person and a director, and this is a universe that I would love to be a part of.”
Flanagan has already pitched Gunn’s DC film project for a Clayface movie. He previously said he would be “really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.”
He later said that he actually pitched that film to Warner Bros., saying, “They didn’t take the bait. Although I’m ready to go at any time.”
Flanagan then talked about his pitch meeting with the studio about Clayface being a horror film, and that wasn’t the only DC film they talked about. He said:
“I went to Warner Bros. to have the DC meeting. It was a general meeting with [producer] Jon Berg asks if there was anything in the DC Universe I might be good for…
“I really want to[ed] to do Clayface. I came in and said, ‘You know, if you want to do a DC horror thing, man, I have a great Clayface performance. I would love to do that movie.'”
“And then, if it hadn’t been, I would have wanted to talk about Scarecrow and Justice League Dark and Constantine. And I just threw it all out there and said, ‘As a kid, I dressed up as Superman, because he was my hero: Christopher Reeve’s Superman was my hero.’ And the meeting went nowhere. [Berg] I didn’t really catch any of that stuff.”
It’s a shame they’re not interested in a Clayface movie or any of these other DC projects. But maybe one day James Gunn and Peter Safran will let him do a DC movie.
Flanagan is currently working on a new Exorcist film and is also developing an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.
Speaking about The Exorcist project, he said: “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it’s an honor to have the chance to try something new, bold and terrifying in its universe.
“Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, who I’ve made some of my favorite work with, makes it even more exciting.”
Are there any other DC characters you’d like to see Flanagan explore in a film?
Mike Flanagan when asked if he will do something with DC:
“I’ve always been a huge fan of James Gunn as a person and a director, and this is a universe I would love to be a part of.”
