I know we’ve heard bits and pieces of the story of what led up to Hugh Jackman to reprise his role as Wolverine after retiring from playing the character after Logan. But, My name is Ryan Reynolds. shared the story again with new details in a heartfelt tribute she wrote for the actor.
Reynolds also talks about working with Jackman on Deadpool and Wolverine and the things he learned from the experience. He wrote:
“On August 14, 2022, @thehughjackman stopped his car to call me.
“He’d had a shitty week… he’d had the flu, two flat tires, and some random idiot had thrown eggs at him. But what happened next, happened fast. He told me he wanted to bring The Wolverine back.
“Months later, he not only brought Wolvie back to life, but he (finally) donned the iconic yellow suit.
“@slevydirect and I haven’t talked about it much, but we were under a lot of pressure, worried about how we were going to introduce these characters into the MCU, worried that all of our secret characters WILL stay secret, along with so many moving parts.
“But when Hugh walked on set in THAT DRESS… everyone knew something special was happening. I remember thinking everything was going to be okay.
“For months of filming and 100 years of editing and post-production, I had a front-row seat to WOLVERINE. Watching and learning from my friend and favorite actor.
“Two things can be true: 1) I sometimes eat too much sugar and secretly throw an egg at him to prove something. And 2) I can be both a fan and a friend, at the same time.
“I met him in Sydney around 2007. He was already a movie star at the time and I came on set as a supporting actor. Getting halfway through production is not that different from starting a new school. I was a nervous wreck.
“Film sets can have a frightening imbalance of power, and I remember seeing how he treated every member of the crew with genuine respect and appreciation. He argued that the term ‘director’ isn’t just for people with their name on the poster.
“I don’t know anyone more thoughtful and classy than Hugh. He would do anything for someone he loves. He would do anything for someone he just met.
“In Deadpool & Wolverine, Hugh didn’t just make Wolverine fans’ dreams come true. He made MY dreams come true. He is THE X-Man.”
