Several years ago it was announced that Marvel Studios was developing a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsbut since that news came out, a lot has changed.
As you know, Marvel has been making a lot of behind-the-scenes changes to its film and television slate and how it makes those projects. It’s hard to know if every previously announced project will actually make it to fruition, but it looks like Marvel is still planning on making Shang-Chi 2.
During a recent interview with The Press Trust of India, Shang-Chi star Simu Liu confirmed that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is “definitely in the works” at Disney and Marvel.
He said: “A lot of it is above my level of expertise, but it’s definitely happening. So, I’m very excited to work on it and it’s going to be awesome. I can’t really say anything else other than that.”
There had been earlier reports that the film would be released after Avengers: Judgment Day OR Avengers: Secret Wars.
As for what we can expect from the sequel, Liu previously hinted that the film would expand on the mythos and hopefully include as many of the original cast members as possible:
“Going into a sequel is exciting. It’s not necessarily like there’s pressure to perform or pressure to surpass. It feels like we’ve created a world and there’s something really nostalgic and exciting about going back to that world that we spent so much time conceptualizing and thinking about.
“And then we’ll go back and revisit some things, but we’ll also show the viewer some new things. We’ll deliver all the incredible action that we were celebrated for in the first film, but then we also hope to explore new sides of Shaun’s character and the characters that surround him.
“That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She is over the moon and simply the queen of everything.”
Shang-Chi will return for Marvel’s upcoming animated series, Marvel Zombies, which promises to be a lot of fun!
