Vince Vaughn Says ‘Responsible Comedy’ Is ‘Boring’, Wants Young Directors to Be Given Creative Freedom

Vince Vaughn He’s not a fan of the way the big Hollywood studios are handling comedy these days. He recently railed against R-rated comedies and explained why they don’t make as many of them as they used to.

Now, in an interview with Variety, Vaughn is asked how easy it was for him to find people who gave him the freedom he sought for the project he was making.

She began by saying, “It’s kind of like dating, isn’t it? Or making new friends. I don’t know anyone who’s like, ‘I really like it when someone makes a character as educated and evolved as possible.’ If anything, it’s like, ‘Can we get away with this?'”

He continued to use his film Accident for example, saying: “I remember when we first shot Accidentwe were doing great [R-rated]and we did stuff and it was fun because we were almost making a movie for ourselves to be funny and there were no ‘parents’ around.”

He then goes into the fact that this is a current problem and that responsible comedy is a “bore.” He said: “I think it’s a big problem now: you have to let young people go and make a movie and leave them alone.

“They’ll figure it out eventually. And part of the fun is you meet people. Like the Zahler stuff. Look how much it resonated, because there’s something about it that feels provocative, in the sense that he’s allowing himself to be what he wants to be.

“It’s not about worrying about offending anyone. As Kurt Vonnegut said, ‘If you open a window and try to please everyone, you’ll get pneumonia.’ I think the things that resonate are always things that at least seem authentic to the piece.

“They’re not trying to codify it in a way that feels responsible. To me, it’s a dead bore; responsible comedy feels like nap time.”

I agree 100%! If you go back and watch comedies from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s, the filmmakers really pushed the envelope and did great things in comedy! A lot of those movies are classics and when you watch them again they are hilarious!

Hollywood doesn’t make comedy classics anymore. Most of them are pretty forgettable these days and that’s a shame.
