It’s no secret that the director Ridley Scott would have liked him to direct the sequels of Blade Runner AND AlienBut, after all these years, he still talks about it and obviously regrets not having accepted these projects.
During an interview with Vanity Fair on its upcoming sequel Gladiator IIThe director talked about his career and the film industry, and he doesn’t see the direction of the sequels of Alien AND Blade Runner like a missed opportunity.
Scott said: “I was slow to get started. I mean, I should have done the sequels of Alien and Blade Runner. It changes over the years. At the time, I didn’t want to relive it. So Jim Cameron came along, and then David Fincher, in Alien.”
Scott later said that producers and studios like Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox didn’t give him much choice about what to do with the sequels.
He explained: “I’m the author of two franchises. Most Hollywood directors, certainly, let’s say, at my level, don’t let that stuff go.
“But I did Alien as my second film, so I didn’t have much choice. And Blade Runner was my third film. So, I didn’t have a choice because I had very tough partners. It was a bit like ‘Welcome to Hollywood.'”
Regarding the way the sequels were handled, Scott said, “They never told me or asked me. You can imagine I wasn’t happy.”
Regardless, both Aliens and Blade Runner 2049 were amazing movies! The directors who made those movies did an incredible job, and there’s a chance they would have been very different if Scott had directed them.
While Scott isn’t happy that he didn’t direct those movies, I think the fans are happy with how they turned out. I’m okay with Scott not directing them.
