Alien: Romulus It was screened for critics and initial reactions to the Faith Alvarez-direct have surfaced online. This is a film I have been very excited to watch and like the rest of you, my chance to watch it comes this weekend.
The film has received mixed reactions, but it seems that most who have had the opportunity to see it have enjoyed it, so that’s a good thing. However, not everyone was impressed. I’ve included both positive and negative reactions to the film below.
Alien: Romulus It is set between the events of Alien AND Aliensand follows a “group of young people on a distant world who find themselves confronted by the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
Check out the reactions below and let us know what you think!
HOLY MOTHER OF XENOMORPHS #AlienRomulus ABSOLUTELY BULLSHIT!! You DON’T understand!!@fedalvar Thank you so much sir for the love and attention you put into this film, which is a masterpiece on how to continue an iconic franchise!!

#AlienRomulus is Don’t Breathe in space. A disgusting amalgamation of Scott’s prequels and the first two. Fights like hell to find his own identity. Sometimes he succeeds (and is sick and twisted), sometimes he doesn’t, but Fede’s tactile sets give us the grittiest and dirtiest entrance ever! photo.twitter.com/1NddrwWVtA

#AlienRomulus It’s a crazy rollercoaster ride through the previous six Alien films, using bits and pieces from all of them to tell a focused, mostly standalone story filled with glorious gore and scares. It gets better as it goes, culminating in a phenomenal big jump of a third act. photo.twitter.com/mY8Hkbe0gD

#AlienRomulus This is the first time I’ve been terrified during an Alien movie. Cailee Spaeny’s Rain is a perfect character to follow on this journey and through Fede Alvarez’s twists and turns, you never really know where Romulus is going. The third act is really WILD. I love it… photo.twitter.com/vEaiz5966B

Aliens are scary again! #AlienRomulus plays out all the greatest hits, paying homage to the entire series before embarking on one of the most jaw-dropping final acts I’ve seen in a while. The anti-corporate fangs have never been sharper, and David Jonsson is the film’s beating (milky) heart. photo.twitter.com/t2X7ASVHEk

#AlienRomulus It’s a solid action-packed franchise entry. Fede Alvarez nails the vibe. Some bad jump scares, unearned nods to the series, and a shaky final act, but there’s a lot to like here with its thrilling action scenes. David Jonsson is a standout. photo.twitter.com/s6RR0lxb96

#AlienRomulus It’s disgusting. It starts off slow and spirals into confusion. I didn’t find the characters memorable, but it makes up for it with its more grotesque scenes and creature design. It ups the ante with every act, and when you think it’s over, think again. I understand why it’s R-rated. photo.twitter.com/8lwLW2fpF3

ALIEN: ROMULUS isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead, Fede Álvarez puts his own fucking spin on a classic horror story with some truly gorgeous visual storytelling. It’s a bit too nostalgic at times, but Fede has proven his worth for a trilogy.

ALIEN: ROMULUS is mostly a gratuitous nostalgia game, rehashing what came before with the occasional thrill, but in a franchise known for its psychosexual weirdness, it’s the safest, most bland, and most inane the series has ever been. I didn’t love it. photo.twitter.com/n3RtpYvXgJ

Alien Romulus is curious. Effective scares, but every scene feels like a video game level, a theme park intro, or a horror night maze. The character work didn’t impress me at all either, and they’re an easy target.
It’s not for me. photo.twitter.com/kRayfGuoR4

I’m so happy to report this @fedalvar‘S #AlienRomulus This is awesome. The two hours fly by and both Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are so good. I loved the use of practical effects. You don’t have to have seen any other Alien movies to watch this. But it would help. photo.twitter.com/eo2EZxTNnj

Never doubt Fede Alvarez. #AlienRomulus It’s a return to form for the franchise in that it’s an unapologetically sequel, but it’s also packed with thrilling, disgusting, and scary as hell moments. Definitely in my top 3 of the series! photo.twitter.com/Di46eQRzCW

For me, #AlienRomulus It feels like a Greatest Hits of the franchise; there’s not much new here (except [REDACTED]and I love it!!), but what’s here is exceptionally well done. Fantastic work with the squicky creatures, gorgeous sound and photography, Spaeny + Jonsson are rock solid. I’m thrilled! photo.twitter.com/HH70K47Tsh

ALIEN: ROMULUS is another successful franchise “acquisition” for Fede Alvarez, even if the story seems a bit stiff in its ties to the franchise. I’m happy to see Fede continue with horror, there are some Xeno/Facehugger scenes that are tense as hell, but they never quite match his EVIL DEAD. Is that okay? photo.twitter.com/z0w4Yb4ixU

ALIEN: ROMULUS leans heavily on its horror roots to create a relentless, visceral thrill ride that starts slowly and builds in intensity until it leaves you breathless by the end. Devoid of any thematic depth, it incorporates so many winks, nods, and moments of… photo.twitter.com/QSKZdj6cwm

ALIEN: ROMULUS is sly, efficient, and depressingly lifeless, draining a familiar aesthetic of the strange psychosexual substance that made it iconic. Spaeny sells his Ripley stand-in, but he’d always rather have Sir Ridley’s messy struggle with divinity than his cover band.

The film also stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabella Merced, Archie Renaux (Shadow and bone), Spike Fear (After sun), and the new arrival Aileen Wu.
Alvarez directs from a script he wrote with Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott he is also a producer of the film together with Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler) for Scott Free, with Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) AND Tom Moran (The King of Donuts) as executive producers.
Alien: Romulus will hit theaters on August 16, 2024.
