Suicide Squad director Davide Ayer recently shared some pages from the script for the original version of his DC movie, revealing how things originally ended between Harley Quinn and the Joker.
The director is still obviously angry and annoyed by the cut of the film that Warner Bros. released. He still feels the need to show proof that his original vision of the film was much better than what we all saw.
The script pages also include an expanded version of the moment when Joker uses the electroshock machine on Dr. Harleen Quinzel, and we learn more about the moment when Harley Quinn turns her back on Joker during the final battle with the Enchantress.
I would love to see Ayer’s vision of Suicide Squad, but it will never be released. All we have is what Ayer shares with us, like these script pages.
When previously asked about his biggest heartbreak in Hollywood, Ayer explained that Suicide Squad he trashed it, saying, “Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get fucked by someone you hate. The biggest one is ‘Suicide Squad.’ That shit destroyed me. It kicked my ass.”
Whenever he talks about this experience, he always explains how the studio screwed him. He went on to explain how everything went to pieces for the film:
“You’re coming right from ‘Fury,’ right? I had the city in my hands, I could do anything, and I did anything, and [I] embark on this journey with [‘Suicide Squad’]And it’s the same thing: authentic, sincere, we do all the rehearsals, we really get into each other’s soul.
“We create this amazing, collaborative thing, right? And then ‘Deadpool’ comes out, right? And they never tested ‘Batman v. Superman,’ so they expected it to be different, and then they got trashed by all the critics. Then it’s like, ‘OK, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a fucking comedy now.'”
Speaking previously about his original cut of the film, the director said: “All I know is that my unreleased film works much better than the studio version. The interest in my cut that was shown feels real and organic.”
In the theatrical cut of Suicide Squadwe were led to believe that Joker died in that helicopter crash before making his surprise return in the film’s final moments to bail Harley out of Belle Reve. Warner Bros. decided that Ayer’s vision was too dark and decided to lighten the story and tone, hence the “happy ending.”
