Jenna Ortega once shared his honest feelings about his experiences during the production of the first season of WednesdayOne of the most daring admissions was that he began changing lines in the script without telling the writers.
There was some controversy over his comments and if you don’t remember what he said, here’s his quote: “I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down on a set as hard as I had to on Wednesday.
“Everything Wednesday does, everything I had to play, made no sense for her character. The fact that she was in a love triangle? It made no sense. There was a line about a dress she has to wear to a prom and she’s like, ‘Oh my god, I love that. Ugh, I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’
“I had to say, ‘No.’ There were times on that set where I even became almost unprofessional in a way, where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I had to sit down with the writers, and they were like, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I had to go and explain why I couldn’t go and do certain things.”
These comments have struck a nerve with some professionals. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Jenna Ortega reflected on her comments about changing her character’s lines in the Netflix series Wednesday.
She admits, “I probably could have used my words better to describe all of this. I think, often, I’m such a rambler. I think it was hard because I felt like if I had portrayed the situation better, it probably would have been received better.”
Many Hollywood writers took to social media to accuse Ortega of being “toxic” and “beyond the pale,” and on picket lines, some members of the Writers Guild of America carried signs with slogans like “Without writers, Jenna Ortega will have nothing to hit!”
Ortega continued, “Everything I said felt so amplified… It felt almost dystopian to me,” Ortega, now 21, told Vanity Fair. “I felt like a caricature of myself.”
She went on to talk about the lessons she learned from that experience, saying, “You’re never going to please everyone, and as someone who’s naturally a people pleaser, it was really hard for me to understand that. Some people might just not like you… and that’s okay.”
Ortega also said that she, too, got “sick of myself last year,” adding, “My face was everywhere… so it’s fair to say that if I opened my phone and saw the same girl with a dumb quote or something, I’d be sick of it, too.”
Wednesday Executive Producer and Director Tim Burton’s World She spoke about working with Ortega, saying that she is “very direct. She’s very hands-on, and I find that very refreshing and beautiful and artistic.”
He also said that Ortega “could lead [the series] if he wanted to. I’ve seen, from day one, that he’s very aware. Sometimes he’s more aware than me.”
Ortega is not only the protagonist of Wednesdaybut in the second season, she takes on the role of producer and is encouraged to make suggestions.
Wednesday The second season is expected to hit Netflix in 2025.
