Hollywood doesn’t make as many R-rated comedies as it once did, and during an appearance on Hot Ones, Vince Vaughn shares his thoughts on why he thinks this is so.
As you know, it was precisely those raunchy, R-rated comedies that helped launch Vaughn’s career with films like Swingers, old schoolAND Intruders at the wedding.
Vaughn explored what he thinks is going on, saying, “They overthink it, and it’s like, this is crazy, you get these rules, like, if you took geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are wrong, instead of 90 degrees. So it became this idea or concept, like, they were like, ‘You have to have an IP.'”
Vaughn went on to use the board game Battleship as an example of how Hollywood has turned an intellectual property into a “vehicle for storytelling” simply because it has a recognizable name.
He added: “People in charge don’t want to get fired any more than they want to do something great, so they want to sort of follow a set of rules that are kind of set in stone, but don’t actually translate.
“But as long as they follow them, they won’t lose their jobs because they can say, ‘Well, look, I made a movie based on the board game. Pay day so even if the movie didn’t work, you can’t let me go, right?’”
Vaughn hopes that R-rated comedies, similar to those seen in the 1990s and early 2000s, will return to the big screen.
The actor concluded: “People want to laugh, people want to watch things that feel a little, you know, dangerous or that push the envelope. I think you’re going to see more of that in the cinematic space sooner rather than later, I would say.”
Vuagn will next appear in the murder mystery comedy series Bad monkey and will be the protagonist of the comedy Mike and Nick and Nick and Alice.
What do you think of Vaughn’s ideas about R-rated comedies? Do you think Hollywood will eventually start making more of them?
