I said it in the title, so I assume if you’re here, you’ve seen the movie, or you just don’t care about spoilers, but if you’re here by mistake, here’s another warning that the rest of the article is full of spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine.
With that out of the way, we can now talk about those epic cameos in the film that made the cinematic experience so much fun.
In the film, Deadpool and Wolverine were banished into the Void, where they clashed with Cassandra Nova, then ran into Jennifer GarnerElectra and Wesley SnipeBlade, who we haven’t seen for a long time, but who we remember from his previous Marvel roles.
Then he came in My First Encounter with Channing TatumGambit! It was a shock, as the role eluded him for over a decade, but man, was it so fun to finally see him as Ragin’ Cajun, Remy LeBeau.
In 2006, when X-Men: The Last Stand was in production, The X-Men AND X2 director Singer Bryan had planned to use Gambit in the film, but ultimately did not return to direct the third installment.
Tatum was pre-selected to play Gambit in the last Stand but the character was ultimately cut from the script before it was officially cast.
Fast forward to X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), when Gambit was stuck in the film’s script, but this time it was Tatum who had the conflict, as he was stuck in filming GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra While X-Men Origins: Wolverine was in production.
Taylor’s Kitsch was chosen in his place, signing a three-picture deal, although X-Men Origins: WolverineThe poor performance of has put an end to the franchise’s future plans for more The Origins of the X-Men film and essentially ended Kitsch’s brief reign as Gambit.
Tatum’s idea finally seemed to come to fruition in 2015, when he attended Comic-Con with Fox and was announced as Gambit in a solo outing, alongside the cast of X-Men Apocalypse AND Dead Pool (2016).
But the project never got any further, it passed from one director to another, after three of them dropped out, and Tatum hoped to direct the film in a last ditch effort to get it made, but Fox quickly canceled the project and Tatum was devastated.
So this appearance was very sweet for Tatum, as well as for the fans who were interested in his performance. I loved him as Gambit, and I hope that since he wasn’t killed in the movie, we’ll see him again.
He was so funny, badass and cool. Do you hope to see Gambit return in future MCU projects?
