Jupiter AND Anthony Russo will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct the next two epic Avengers films, Avengers: Judgment Day AND Avengers: Secret Wars.
Big demands came down over the weekend at Comic-Con during Marvel’s big Hall H panel. It was also announced that Robert Downey Jr. was returning to the MCU, but this time as Doctor Doom!
The directors have since released a statement on their return to Marvel. They had previously described Secret Wars as “the book that made us fall in love with comics.” Now they’ve shared:
You are the best fans in the world and we have missed you.
When we made Avengers: Endgame we really believed that was the end of the road for us in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We had put all the passion and love and imagination that we had into Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and then we culminated it all with Endgame.
All in the space of a few years. We had spent everything we had creatively and left all our emotions on the floor. But as time passed, we started to feel like maybe there was a story where we could find a new narrative path. It’s why we fell in love with comics in the first place. That story is Secret Wars.
We can’t express how excited we are to dive back into this world and explore such a deliciously complex character as Victor Von Doom. And there’s no better friend or collaborator to do it with, [than] The great [Robert Downey Jr.].
Marvel guys, let’s go…
It’s pretty awesome that the Russos are coming back for more Marvel movies! But the response to the Russos and Downey Jr. returning to the MCU hasn’t been met with universal approval. Some fans aren’t too happy about it, and there’s been mixed reactions.
One of the biggest problems is the confusion over whether Robert Downey Jr. is Doom or a variant of Tony Stark masquerading as a villain. We’ll find out sooner or later!
