Oh, Hollywood…sometimes you make it really hard to like yourself. Michael’s Bay and former Paramount Pictures chairman Adam Goodman have teamed up to develop a film and television adaptation of the controversial Internet animated film “Skibidi Toilet.”
Goodman said in an interview with Variety’s “Strictly Business” podcast: “We are absolutely in talks right now, both on the television side and in early conversations right now on the film side. But that’s not the whole story for us.”
For those unfamiliar with “Skibidi Toilet,” in 2023, Alexey Gerasimov uploaded an 11-second video to his YouTube channel DaFuq!?Boom! called “skibidi toilet,” which featured a head emerging from a toilet bowl while singing.
This kicked off a strange cultural phenomenon as Skibidi gradually “evolved into more than 70 1- to 5-minute mini-epics depicting the ever-escalating war between the Toilets and the Cyborgs.”
The videos are “explosive, violent, and devoid of any discernible dialogue. These qualities have earned him a worldwide audience, not to mention the distinction of being a cultural icon that Generation Alpha can truly call their own.”
Goodman believes Gerasimov’s creation has enormous potential, saying, “He’s building something that could be the next ‘Transformers’ or could be a Marvel universe.”
Bay is apparently working closely with Gerasimov on the content. Goodman says, “I will say that Michael and Jeffrey Beecroft, who is his longtime production designer and a colleague of his who has worked with him on all of his films, have worked very closely with Alexey to really professionalize the kind of support engine of this, to make sure that if we ever decide to go to the movies or to television, that it is somehow lifted beyond just the resources that creators have on the Internet.”
It’s absolutely insane to me that they think Skibidi Toilet can be as big as the Transformers and Marvel franchises! Is this Skibidi Toilet thing really that popular?
Not only that, Goodman said they are considering the idea of a live action/animated hybrid version of Skibidi which he compared stylistically to John Wick AND Quarter 9 movie.
He added: “If we find a partner who really believes there’s an opportunity to grow this thing and really see the storytelling grow and get to where we hope it can go, then film and TV seems like a natural extension for us.”
They’re also trying to get fans to join in on the fun in creative ways. Goodman explained, “This is one of the things that’s really different from anything we’ve worked on before.
“We usually issue takedowns; we’re ready to make sure nobody gets in the way of something we want to control. In this case, we took a very different approach.
“We want creators to play with our intellectual property. We want to make sure that people do things, within reason of course, as long as they follow a certain guideline for us.”
Can Bay and Goodman take this cultural moment and turn it into a hugely successful film and television franchise? It makes no sense to me, so I’m obviously out of the loop with the Skibi Toilet crowd.
