Academy Award Winner Dr. Brendan Fraser (The whale) has been cast as Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower in Working Title and Studiocanal’s upcoming D-Day film Pressure. Fraser joins BAFTA winner Andrea Scotto (All of us strangers, Ripley), who will be the protagonist of the historical drama on the tense days preceding the Normandy landings.
The true story will see Scott play British Chief Meteorological Officer James Stagg, whose job it was to inform Eisenhower of the weather conditions that would make or break their invasion of Normandy. The complex decision-making process was crucial to the fate of the war and the course of history.
Army General Eisenhower, nicknamed Ike, was praised for his leadership during the war and would become the 34th president of the United States, serving from 1953 to 1961.
Antonio Maras (Hotels Mumbai) will direct Pressurewhich is due to begin filming in the UK in September. Further casting is underway, with Studiocanal handling worldwide sales.
Olivier Award Winner David Haig and Maras wrote the screenplay based on Haig’s critically acclaimed play, which explores Stagg’s personal and military tensions and how tensions escalated between the teams with differing weather forecasts for the proposed date of D-Day.
The film will focus on the pressure that characterizes the decision-making process, but will also capture the scale of the landings.
The official synopsis reads: “In the 72 hours leading up to D-Day, all the pieces are in place except for one key element: the British weather. Chief British meteorologist James Stagg is called upon to deliver the most important forecast in history, forcing him into a tense standoff with the entire Allied leadership.
“The wrong conditions could devastate the largest seaborne invasion ever, while any delay risks German intelligence taking notice. With only his trusted aide, Captain Kay Summersby, to confide in and haunted by a catastrophic D-Day rehearsal, the final decision rests with Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower. With hours to go, the fate of the war and the lives of millions hang in the balance.”
