The 20th anniversary of Catwoman it’s this year, and Halle Berry recently spoke with Weekly show on the film to celebrate the occasion.
As you know, Catwoman It wasn’t well received, it was panned by critics and fans, and it was a box office flop. Berry even received a Razzie for her performance, and she showed up to the ceremony with the Oscar in hand to accept the award, which was awesome!
But Berry was not a fan of these negative reactions and hated the fact that the film’s failure was blamed entirely on her, despite other people being involved in the making of the film, such as the writers, director and producers.
Barry said: “I thought it was a failure of Halle Berry, but I didn’t do it alone. All these years, I carried it with me.”
I just have to say that it’s not her fault that the movie sucks, it was mostly the script, direction and executive decisions! We all know Berry is a great actress, unfortunately with that movie there were not that talented people involved in the making of the movie.
The actress continued to share her thoughts on the story, saying, “I always thought the idea of Catwoman saving women from face cream was a little soft. All the other superheroes save the world; they don’t just save women from chapped faces.
“I always knew it was a soft superhero situation, but at that time in my career I didn’t have the autonomy that I have today or the belief that I could handle it, so I went with it.”
Berry added: “Things have been going smoothly. [for me]”during production and “it was a fantastic shoot. I had a blast. I worked hard to embody a cat in so many ways, psychologically and physically.
“I never thought it was bad; I just thought maybe it wouldn’t be as big as other movies because the stakes in the plot weren’t as high.”
It was when the first picture of Halle Berry wearing her Catwoman costume hit the internet that the fan hate began. I remember seeing that picture when it was posted on Ain’t It Cool News a while back.
Fans were upset because the character’s signature cat suit had been replaced with a skimpier, more ridiculous-looking outfit, which kind of looked ridiculous. But everyone thought it was cool!
As for that costume, producer Denise DiNovi They explained their thinking: “That was the first thing that started the negativity. It was one of the first takes before we perfected it. It was so different from what people were used to in the other movie.
“A suit, by definition, covers everything. We thought it would be nice to be more rock & roll and nude. Halle was famous for wearing a bikini in her Bond movie, and we were like, why not?
“People have had such a reaction, which is really ridiculous. We had the famous Colleen Atwood help us with that costume. Halle gave us a lot of suggestions. I still think it’s beautiful and much more modern!”
Berry added: “The fans were shocked by the costume. It was something different, but in our minds, why keep remaking Catwoman if you’re not going to take a risk and bring something different? The beauty of it was that it was more suited to my version of her, my body, who I was and my sensibilities.”
Speaking about the negative reaction to the film after its release, Berry said: “I didn’t like it [the backlash]As a woman of color, I am used to carrying negativity around, to fighting, to being a fish swimming against the current alone.
“I’m used to challenging stereotypes and finding a way out of nowhere… It didn’t derail me because I’ve been fighting as a black woman my whole life. A little bit of bad publicity about a movie? I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t going to stop my world or derail me from doing what I love to do.”
She went on to share what she hated about the whole thing: “I hated that this was forced on me, and I hate that, to this day, it’s still a failure of mine. I know I can handle it.
“I still have a career 20 years later. It’s just part of my story. That’s okay, and I’ve brought other failures and successes with me. People have opinions, and sometimes they’re stronger than others. You just have to keep moving forward.”
Catwoman It was just a product of its time and how studios were trying to be ahead of the curve with comic book movies at a time when comic book movies were still finding their feet. This attempt at Catwoman didn’t work.
