Luke Evans is set to star in the next Prime Video series CriminalHe will have a starring role in the series based on the graphic novel by Ed Brubaker.
Evans joins an impressive ensemble cast that includes Charlie Hunnam, Emilia Clarke, John Hawkes, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy AND Taylor Sele.
Criminal Set in a gritty, noir world, the series delves into the criminal underworld, exploring the lives of the various characters that inhabit this dark and morally complex realm.
Each volume of Criminal It’s a standalone story, but they’re all interconnected, creating a rich tapestry of crime, betrayal, and redemption. The series actually presents a really compelling narrative.
Evans will play Tracy Lawless, a character who was “kicked out of his family’s outlaw life (his father is the legendary Teeg Lawless and Ricky (Halper) is his little brother) at age 18 when a judge gave him the choice between prison or the military.
“In the army, Tracy thrived, his wild outlaw instincts channeled into rigid military discipline. He was inducted into the Special Forces and trained to become an expert in covert operations and guerilla warfare. But underneath, the Lawless blood still pumps in his heart.”
Clarke plays Mallory, described as “a cunning and daring robber, as quick with a gun as she is with her wits.”
“She’s part of a team of robbers with Ricky Lawless (Gus Halper), with whom she has a passionate Bonnie and Clyde-style relationship. Mallory is a woman on the brink, living on the wrong side of the law and hiding secrets that will lead her and her entire team into the danger zone.”
Hunnam will play Leo, described as “a brilliant master thief who sees all sides and specializes in plans without weapons and without violence.
“Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other criminals think he’s a coward, especially when compared to his father Tommy, who went to prison for murdering the city’s most feared man, Teeg Lawless.”
Hawkes will play Sebastian Hyde, “a tough guy who suffered a stroke six months ago and now walks with a cane. Once the biggest shark in the shark tank, Hyde is now showing his humanity a little bit, maybe a little too much.
“A gambling club owner, the kind of man whose name is accompanied by fear, Hyde can be both a source of amusement one minute and a ruthless executioner the next.”
Ryan’s Stain AND Anna Boden will direct the first four episodes of the series, and Brubaker will serve as co-showrunner alongside crime novelist Jordan Harper.
Brubaker said in a statement: “Sean and I have been building this world in our books for over a decade, and now to be able to bring it to life for Amazon is simply incredible.
“And to have Amazon support the project the way they have, and show so much confidence in my and Jordan’s vision for the show, is even more incredible.”
Nick Pepper, head of Amazon MGM Studios in the United States, said in a statement: Criminal is a beloved graphic novel from the most iconic team in comic book history.
“I know our global Prime Video customers will immediately embrace this story, and I can’t wait to work with Ed, Jordan and the team to bring it to the screen.”
Brubaker explained in a past interview: “Criminal is an interwoven saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past. And one of the big events in the pasts of a lot of these characters, which is referenced from the very first Criminal story, was the death of Teeg Lawless.
“Before we even met Teeg, we knew he had died when his son was a teenager, but beyond the identity of his killer, we never told the rest of the story. He was just a ghost haunting the series, as Teeg Lawless became one of the most popular characters in the comic.”
