Batman: Caped Crusader Creator Bruce Tim shares some new details about young Bruce Wayne and his decision to wage war on crime.
Timm has an interesting and different take on Batman’s origin than has come before. In this version of the story, Bruce is 8 years old when he decides what he wants to do with his life after his mother and father are murdered.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Timm explains: “The slightly different approach that we’re taking is that at night, when he’s lying in bed and replaying his parents’ murders over and over again in his head, it’s so shocking and so horrific that the way he deals with it is he decides, right in that moment, to declare war on crime.”
And he continues: “And so, literally from that moment on, even though he’s eight years old, he’s already Batman in a way…”
In every other iteration of Batman’s origins that I know of, Bruce is an adult when he decides to become Batman. His quest for vengeance in this version of the story obviously begins at a much younger age!
Timm explains that this series is set in the very early years of Batman’s crime-fighting career: “Batman is so early in his career that in the first episode he’s still an urban legend.”
He continued saying: “It is not Year One,” referring to the Frank Miller AND David Mazzucchelli Batman source comic. “It’s more like ‘Second Week.'”
Not only will Bruce Wayne be trying to figure out how to become Batman, but this will be a different Batman than the versions we’ve seen before.
Timm said, “I wanted to make it a little weird and creepy. If you’re stuck in a room with Batman, whether you’re Commissioner Gordon or Barbara Gordon or Renee Montoya, you don’t feel comfortable. You’re like, ‘What is this guy? What is he about?'”
He also revealed that Batman turns Alfred into a weapon in this story: “He turns Alfred into a weapon. He’s not Batman’s surrogate father anymore. He’s a guy who’s going to allow Batman to fight crime.
“That’s how focused he is [Bruce] is. It’s a strange interpretation of him. But it’s something I don’t think we’ve ever seen before.”
The series description reads: “Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals are rampant, and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear.
“Forged in the fires of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something more and less than human: BATMAN. His single-handed crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions have deadly and unforeseen ramifications.”
The cast includes Hamish Linklater (Midnight snack) like Batman, Christina Ricci like Selina Kyle / Catwoman, My Friend Jamie Chung is Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, and former voice actress of Batman Diedrich Bader will play Harvey Dent / Two-Face.
Other cast members include Minnie the driver, Eric Morgan Stuart, Michelle C. Bonilla, Krystal Joy Brown, John DiMaggio, Grace McKenna, Written by Jason Watkins, Paul Scheer, Answers, by Gary Anthony Williams, Dan Donohue, David Krumholtz, Haley Joel OsmentAND Toby Stephen.
This animated series has been in development for some time with Timm, The World of JJ Abrams, Mattia Reevesand comic book writer And Brubaker leading the charge.
