I was really hoping to see Kevin Costner’S Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 do well at the box office this weekend. I was previously told that the film was on track to open between $11 million and $18 million. Ultimately, it grossed $11 million domestically.
This saddens me because it is a great western and I can’t wait to see the next chapter in the story. The film is being distributed by Warner Bros., but Costner financed the film himself and also brought in outside private investors to help out.
Costner also financed the marketing of the film, so WB isn’t really making any money by distributing it. Costner is the one who will be hit the hardest. Even if the film stays in theaters a little longer, I doubt it will recoup its $100 million budget.
The horizon opened up next to A Quiet Place: Day One which recorded the biggest opening gross of the franchise with $53 million, while the horror prequel came in third at the box office.
from Pixar Inside Out 2 continues to hold the top spot, grossing another $57.4 million over the weekend and surpassing the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Audiences are definitely showing their love for Pixar!
All three of these films are great films that are worth seeing in the theater. But, as a fan of Western films, I was hoping Horizon he would do much better than he did.
In the meantime, Bad Boys: Ride or Die came in at #4 during its fourth weekend in theaters, earning another $10.3 million to bring its domestic total to $165.3 million. Rounding out the weekend at #5 was the Hindi film Kicks, which would have brought in between $5 and $6 million.
