The Pixar animated film Inside out 2 became the biggest box office hit this year. Fans and critics alike have rave reviews of the film, and consistent feedback is that the film is so relatable to teenagers and the parents who raise them. We adults have also been brought back to our adolescence and even to our current anxieties and emotions.
As it turns out, one of the reasons the film feels so authentic is the advisory group the director was able to consult with during the making of the film. During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, the director Kelsey Mann explained:
“They are really an advisory group. I had this idea very early on because I want to make sure that the story we’re telling is authentic and real. It’s been a while since I was 13 and I’ve never been a 13 year old.
So I propose to them, ‘Can I have an advisory group of teenage girls?’ And they say, “Sure.” I thought I had to sell them, but they said, “How many do you want?” I thought, ‘Oh, nine?'”
That’s how “Riley’s Crew” was born, and it was clearly a great lead for the sequel. Mann went on to explain that they also wanted diversity within the group of nine, so they came from all over the country.
This was a really clever way to hear the real life experiences of current teenagers. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, do yourself a favor and watch it.
Inside out 2 is currently playing in cinemas around the world.
