The voice cast has been announced Bruce Timmthe next animated series by Batman: Caped CrusaderAND Hamish Linklater (Midnight snack) will voice Batman, taking over late Batman: The Animated Series star Kevin Conroy.
You can hear a preview of Linklater’s performance in the casting announcement below the video. As you will hear, it is a voice reminiscent of Batman.
It was also revealed Cristina Ricci was cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jamie Chung is Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn and former voice actress of Batman Dierich Bader will play Harvey Dent/Two-Face.
Other cast members include Minnie Driver, Eric Morgan Stuart, Michelle C. Bonilla, Kristal Joy Brown, Giovanni Di Maggio, McKenna Grace, Jason Watkins, Paolo Scheer, Reid Scott, Gary Anthony Williams, Dan Donohue, David Krumholtz, Haley Joel OsmentAND Toby Stephens.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Timm said that Linklater’s performance is one that “no one has done for animation yet.” He said: “There were some things I had in mind in the early ’90s for the original Batman: The Animated Series that I didn’t get to do.
“I wanted to make this emotionally confused version of Batman, extremely detached and almost inhuman. [Bruce Wayne is] a persona that Batman himself cultivated to drive people away from his scent.
“Deep down, he’s not a funny guy. He’s not charming, he’s not sexy or anything like that. He is dedicated to the 24/7 war on crime.
“Hamish was really the only one who nailed exactly what we were looking for. We had a lot of people who were pretty good Batmans, but almost no good Bruces.
Linklater adds: “Bruce Wayne is the mask. He is the secret identity. He is the invention. Batman is the real character, the real guy. It’s set in the 1940s, [so I just thought of] how Batman would try to pretend to be a worldly playboy. I think I just tried to swing and swing and swing until I came into contact with something.
Speaking about Ricci’s Catwoman, Timm said: “We wanted to [Selina Kyle] so as not to be too dark and serious, as most Catwomen have been for the last 20 years or so. We wanted her to be… not silly, but just not serious.”
As for Two-Face, he said, “We thought, well, what if he started out as some kind of schnook? And then, when he disfigures his face, for the first time in his life he truly feels empathy for other people.
When it comes to Harley Quinn, Timm shared, “We thought that, as a psychiatrist, her clientele is made up of some of the richest and most powerful men in Gotham City, and they dump all their bullshit on her.
“It’s driving her crazy. She feels all these things, but because of psychiatrist-client privilege, she can’t do anything about it. She can’t tell anyone.
“We thought that some of these guys had probably confessed really horrible things to her, and she said, ‘Well, I can’t just turn this guy loose on the street, but I can’t hand him over to the police either.’”
The story summary reads: “Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals are rampant, and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear.
“Forged in the fires of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something more and less than human: BATMAN. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions generate deadly, unforeseen consequences.”
This animated series has been in development for some time with Timm, JJ Abrams, Matt Reevesand comic book writer Ed Brubaker leading the charge.
